Fill Your Plate’s Variety is the Spice of Life!

By Julie Murphree, Arizona Farm Bureau

Recently, we talked about beef. But what if you’re hungry for a unique food item and you want to see what Arizona growers produce? Well, of course, we’re going to send you to

When we say unique, we mean it. Did you know Arizona raises its own shrimp? Raised in Gila Bend, the shrimp are free of hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, chemicals and mercury. Desert Sweet Shrimp’s gourmet shrimp are characterized by their clean, sweet taste and are so uncommonly flavorful, that many shrimp lovers prefer to serve them as “stand alones.”

Desert Sweet Shrimp are pond grown in mineral-rich well water, drawn directly from Arizona’s deep ancient sea beds. Carefully monitored and kept meticulously free of pathogens and contaminants, the qualities of this deep well water, combined with the benign effect of the hot desert sun, result in healthier, faster growing, and sweet tasting shrimp.

Or, you’re hungry for Pistachios. You can find growers on too. Cochise Groves, based in Cochise, is the largest family-owned and operated pistachio orchard in Arizona. Here, the powerful, high-desert sun, cool, dry nights, and fertile soil provide the ideal climate for growing the best quality nuts around.

For the specialty food aficionado who loves variety and unique food items, they are easy to find on

When you go to the online directory, you can search by product ─ for example, shrimp or Pistachios. You can also search by zip code or city. But if you know desert shrimp or Arizona pistachios are what you want, a product search is your best bet. Sometimes the producers will deliver to you or meet you at a designated location.
