Organic Food in the News

On December 20, 2010, the USDA offered its third initiative “to help organic producers and those transitioning to organic production implement resource conservation practices on their agricultural operations.”

Why a third Organic Initiative offering?  Because organic food is increasing in popularity.  In Arizona there are an increasing number of farmer’s markets and available organic produce.  There is even a national big box chain that offers organic produce.

Basic economics teaches that as demand increases, so should supply.  This offers increased opportunities for small to mid-size farmers who can (pardon the pun) grow their business and satisfy the demand for organic products.

Funding is provided through the USDA Organic Initiative for qualified farmers.  Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 is the third year of the offering and “up to $50 million is available this year for producers to plan and implement conservation practices.”  The initiative is a result of the 2008 Farm Bill that called for assistance to organic producers.

The official press release can be found here.
