May Showers Bring Spring Flowers: How To Grow Your Flower Garden

By Alexandra Pettit, AZFB Communication Intern

Spring has sprung and its time to start your flower garden. Even someone with the brownest thumb can design and maintain an amazing flower garden. Here is a step by step guide on how to create a successful flower garden.

When you are starting your flower garden you need to map out the space that you are working with. For example, the space I have in my yard is 8 feet long and 4 feet tall. So, I created a diagram to map out my plan.

Next, you need to evaluate whether your flower garden is getting full sun or partial sun during the day. This is important when deciding what flowers you will have in your garden. This is very important, however; full sun flowers will do well in partial sun as well.

Best Full Sun Flowers:

  • Coreopsis
  • Angelonia (Summer Snapdragon)
  • Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia)
  • Red Salvia
  • Blue Salvia
  • Cosmos
  • Sunflowers
  • Vinca (Periwinkle)
  • Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globose)
  • Zinnias (Zinnia elegans)

After deciding on your flowers, you will use your diagram to map out the design of your flower garden. Be sure to use different symbols and colors to represent your different flowers. These Designs can be simple like I have below or complicated.

Lastly, it is to plant your flower garden. Depending on the flowers you choose is depending on the spacing and the amount of water you will need. It is important that you choose flowers that have similar water needs.

Tips and tricks:

  • When looking for flowers talk with the garden center director for some tips on flower selection.
  • Start simple with your design, know they will not always turn out as you planned.
