Watermelon Is More Than Just an Iconic Summer Treat

By Heide Kennedy, Arizona Farm Bureau Communications Intern

Nothing reminds me of summer more than pool parties, backyard barbecues and big slices of watermelon. This bright fruit is a staple at almost every summer party or cookout. I mean, what’s not to love about this crisp, sweet, refreshing fruit that makes juice run down your face every time that you take a bite?

An article by Well + Good reveals that there might be more goodness inside a watermelon than just its sweet and juicy flesh. Watermelon is actually the only whole food source that contains the amino acid L-Citrulline.

So, what is L-Citrulline?  Registered dietician Kim Rose explains that it is a non-protein amino acid that may assist in lowering blood pressure, increasing blood flow and reducing heart rate post-workout, and decreasing the decline in cognitive health.

L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, which means that our bodies produce it on their own. But, it doesn’t hurt to supplement your intake of this healthy amino. While there is no officially determined portion size for watermelon, Rose suggests that a 2-cup serving as being a good amount to take advantage of some of these health benefits.

As it turns out, watermelon is way more than just an iconic summer treat. It has actually got some great health benefits!  Here in Arizona, it’s easy to find locally grown watermelons, as our state is beaten only by California in watermelon production!
