August is all about Arizona Oranges and we thought it would be fun to get to know these delicious orange orbs a little better.  Here are some fun facts, interesting bits of information, and delicious dishes that are all about oranges!

  • There are more than 3,000 people listed in the online version of the white pages with the last name ‘Orange’ but only 16 of them are listed in Arizona.
  • More than 70% of the oranges produced in the U.S. come from Florida and 90% of those oranges are used to make juice.
  • Brazil is the world’s largest producer of oranges.
  • Oranges are a technically berry which means they are about the biggest berries around.
  • Navel oranges got their name because the indentation on the opposite side from the stem looks a lot like a belly-button.  For the sweetest orange, pick the one with the biggest navel.
  • The greenish skin or a green tinge on the skin of some oranges is caused by a reabsorption of chlorophyll during particularly warm weather, but don’t worry, this doesn’t affect the taste.
  • Oranges offer a high dose of anti-oxidants which are believed to fight free radicals and other unhealthy cells that make you age faster.
  • Blood oranges got their name from the bright red color of the pulp inside the fruit.
  • Orange is the third most popular flavor in the world, following chocolate and vanilla.
  • We have Christopher Columbus to thank for all the oranges in America as he is believed to have been the one who brought the first orange seeds to the New World.
