Did you know eating on a schedule is actually good for you? All those years going to school and eating breakfast and lunch at the same time every day actually helped keep you healthy!

As a college student with a heart condition who has class times overlapping meal times and due dates at midnight, it can be easy for me to put off a meal until later or do some late night snacking. But the benefits of keeping a schedule has shown great health benefits.

Studies done by Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York and the American Heart Association have shown that keeping a regular schedule of eating can lower your risk for heart disease and diabetes. On the opposite end of the spectrum, eating at random times, especially after 8 pm, can cause weight gain, an increase in blood pressure, and a change in blood sugar. Read the whole article here.

Here are some actions I am taking to help me live a healthier life:

  1. Eat on schedule that works around my class times.
  2. Prepare healthier snacks.
  3. Stop eating after 6 pm.
  4. Go to bed at a reasonable time.
  5. Drink plenty of water.
  6. Make meals with heart-healthy foods.
  7. Do food prep ahead of time so meal time is easier and less of a hassle.
